A consistent 3"-4" layer of mulch is important for plant health and to reduce weed germination. Hardwood mulch will begin to decompose after it is applied to your beds. This is very healthy for your soil but will require replacement every one to two seasons. After your initial installation of mulch we recommend a 'top dressing" (1.5" layer) every spring or fall season.
To cover bare soil you will need approximately 1 cubic yard for every 100 square feet of bed space. This will provide you with a 3"+ layer of mulch.
To 'Top Dress' you will need approximately 1 cubic yard for every 200 square feet of bed space, this is to maintain a 3"+ layer of mulch.
***Note: Landscape fabric is not needed under hardwood or pine straw mulch.
